About the Civil War Token Society
Founded in 1967, the Civil War Token Society is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to stimulating interest and research in the field of Civil War token collecting. There are approximately 650 active members. The Society conducts an annual general meeting at the ANA World’s Fair of Money where fellow enthusiasts meet for fun and exchange information. Members can order free and discounted reference books to grow their libraries. Members vote each year in the election of officers. Awards are given each year for literary accomplishments, research and service to the Society.
The Society revises and publishes the standard reference books on Civil War tokens.
Civil War Era Numismatics, the Society’s quarterly journal, is well illustrated and has articles on patriotic tokens, store cards, sutler tokens, die sinkers, newly discovered dies and token varieties, merchants, Civil War era history and related numismatics, auctions and more. The purpose of the publication is to provide an exchange of information for members. Each member is entitled to a free 250-character classified advertisement in the Journal. Display advertisements in Civil War Era Numismatics may be purchased to sell or conduct mail bid auctions of tokens or books.
Civil War Token Society members can buy and sell their tokens in the members-only auctions. The Society charges the seller a 10% consignment fee, and successful bidders pay postage and insurance.
The Society's lending library is available to all members. Reference books, articles, recorded media and auction catalogs are available for education and research.
Members are encouraged to apply their talents and skills in service to the Society. The CWTS thrives thanks to volunteers giving as little as a few hours a month. Opportunities include but are not limited to:
